Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at coastalriseschool@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Coastal Rise is being designed around the belief that meaningful learning happens through curiosity, connection, creativity, community involvement, and real-world experiences.

Rather than focusing primarily on worksheets, testing, and passive learning, Coastal Rise aims to create:

  • hands-on, project-based learning experiences
  • strong social-emotional development
  • interdisciplinary learning
  • outdoor and place-based education
  • community partnerships
  • student voice and leadership opportunities
  • learning connected to the real world

The goal is not simply academic success, but helping children grow into thoughtful, capable, emotionally healthy, community-minded adults.

Place-based learning means students learn deeply through connection to the community and environment around them.

At Coastal Rise, this may include learning experiences connected to:

  • coastal ecosystems
  • maritime history and culture
  • environmental stewardship
  • local museums and organizations
  • community experts and small businesses
  • service learning and civic engagement

The Beaufort and Carteret County community itself becomes part of the learning experience.

Yes — thoughtfully and intentionally.

Coastal Rise is being designed around the understanding that children learn best through movement, exploration, hands-on experiences, and authentic engagement with the world around them.

While strong academics remain important, learning may also extend into:

  • outdoor environments
  • museums
  • local organizations
  • community spaces
  • environmental and STEM projects
  • field studies
  • collaborative real-world experiences

The goal is to create balanced, engaging learning experiences that support both academic growth and whole-child development.

Coastal Rise is currently being envisioned as a small, intentionally designed K–8 learning community with mixed-age classrooms that support collaboration, mentorship, flexibility, and deeper relationships.

The current long-term vision includes:

  • K/1
  • 2/3
  • 4/5
  • 6–8

Class sizes will remain intentionally small in order to support individualized learning, strong relationships, social-emotional development, and meaningful project-based experiences.

Coastal Rise is being developed as a non-sectarian, community-centered school that welcomes families from a wide range of backgrounds and beliefs.

While community partnerships may include local organizations, spaces, and groups throughout Beaufort and Carteret County, the vision for Coastal Rise is rooted in belonging, curiosity, stewardship, emotional well-being, and meaningful learning experiences rather than religious instruction.

The goal is to create an inclusive environment where all students and families feel welcomed, respected, and valued.

Coastal Rise is currently being developed with the long-term goal of becoming a nonprofit school.
